3B: Megan Hamma

Always checking your intuitions, or your ability to understand something immediately, is crucial in any situation. It’s also important to not dismiss your intuitions, or trust them blindly. Intuitions, or more commonly known as that ‘gut feeling’ you get, should always be checked. A real life example of people checking their intuition would be a teenage driver versus an experienced driver. Not only is a teenage driver new to the roads and it’s chaos, but they aren’t always sure about certain driving rules, such as, who has the right of way? Do I turn right on red? What do I do when I get to a four-way stop?

Now even though some teenage drivers know the answers, these are still questions that they might ask themselves compared to an experienced driver. (since most experienced drivers have that automatic response, telling them that it is okay to turn right on red, only if the way is clear)
These are intuitions that shouldn’t be dismissed by teenage drivers, because if they were, then there might be even more accidents caused by novice drivers than there already are.
Now this doesn’t mean that experienced drivers shouldn’t, or don’t disregard their intuitions, or that teenagers are responsible for the majority of car accidents, but it means that many adults may be in the same real-life situations just like teenagers are when they drive. This is why it is crucial that teenage drivers, and experienced drivers shouldn’t trust their intuitions blindly. An example of an intuition that an experienced driver might not want to trust blindly, is getting into a car with their friend who has been drinking, and an example of an intuition that a teenage driver might not want to pass up is making sure they have enough distance between their car and the one in front of theirs.
Intuitions are your way of assuring that you are doing the right thing, or something that feels right, but automatically assuming that you’re doing something right, may not always mean that you are. Remember, it is important to check yourself, before you wreck yourself.

  1. I like how you ended it with the clever phrase, "it is important to check yourself, before you wreck yourself." I also liked how you connected this to teenage drivers because that topic is one of the main concerns of parents and one of the main excitements of teenagers. Lots of students in our grade are now starting to drive, and it is important to always check your intuition, especially when the life of a person is on the line.
